Tokoname Chaki (Teapot)玉光吉野桜急須

$150.00

Kakōsei – A Collaboration of Tokoname-yaki and Kutani-yaki

This exceptional teapot is the result of a collaboration between two of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions, Tokoname-yaki and Kutani-yaki. Crafted by Tokoname’s second-generation master artisan, Hirotaka Umehara of Gyokko Kiln, the teapot is made from refined black clay. The intricate hand-painted overglaze decoration is skillfully applied by renowned Kutani artisan Tsugumori Tamura, blending time-honored techniques from both ceramic traditions into a single masterpiece.

Rooted in centuries of craftsmanship, this collaboration brings together two historic pottery regions, Tokoname and Kutani, both of which have preserved their artistry for generations. The teapot is crafted using the traditional wheel-thrown method with red clay, designed to be simple, lightweight, and easy to use. Various techniques, including delicate blue and red dot patterns, gold and silver leaf, and transfer overglaze, are combined harmoniously to complement the teapot’s elegant form.

Ceramesh Filter
In addition to its refined aesthetics, the teapot features a finely crafted Ceramesh filter, a hallmark of Tokoname-yaki’s exceptional craftsmanship. The precision and skill in creating this tea strainer contribute to Tokoname teapots’ reputation for smooth pouring and optimal tea extraction. This is a testament to the dedication and expertise of Tokoname artisans, who continue to refine their craft.

Tokoname – One of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns
Tokoname, a historic pottery town, is located on the western coast of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, overlooking Ise Bay. It serves as the gateway to Chubu Centrair International Airport and is recognized nationwide as one of Japan’s leading ceramic-producing regions. With over a thousand years of history, Tokoname-yaki is counted among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, embodying a rich legacy of craftsmanship and innovation.
