Tokoname-yaki kyusu, or Tokoname teapots, are traditional Japanese teapots crafted in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s six ancient kiln sites. With a history dating back to the Heian period, Tokoname-yaki is known for its high-quality clay, which contains a rich amount of iron. This clay enhances the flavor of tea and is especially valued for brewing Japanese green tea.
The teapots are often made from red clay, called shudei, or high-fired clay, known as yakishime. They are carefully shaped on a potter’s wheel and fired at high temperatures, giving them a smooth, natural finish. Many Tokoname teapots feature a built-in ceramic filter, such as the finely crafted Ceramesh strainer, which allows for a smooth pour while preserving the delicate flavors of tea leaves.
