Tokoname Chaki (Teapot)玉光黒泥平型ビリ急須

$80.00

This handcrafted Tokoname-yaki teapot is made by Gyokko Kiln, led by second-generation artisan Gyokko Umehara. The kiln is known for its mastery of traditional craftsmanship, and both the second and third generations, including Yukitaka Umehara, are certified traditional craftsmen.

The surface of the teapot is finished using the Tobi-Kanna technique, a method where fine patterns are carefully carved while the potter's wheel is spinning. This meticulous process results in a delicate texture that enhances the teapot’s aesthetic appeal.

Designed to serve two to three cups, this teapot is ideal for enjoying tea with company. It features a Ceramesh filter, a finely crafted ceramic tea strainer that allows for smooth pouring and excellent tea extraction.

Each teapot is handmade using high-quality shudei red clay and yakishime high-fired clay, shaped on a potter’s wheel. Due to its handcrafted nature, slight variations in size and color may occur, and the kiln’s firing process may create unique surface variations, making each piece one of a kind.

Tokoname-yaki is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, dating back to the late Heian period. It is known for its distinctive red color, achieved by firing clay rich in iron, which is naturally sourced from the Chita Peninsula. This characteristic shudei clay enhances the flavor of tea and is a defining feature of Tokoname’s pottery.

This teapot embodies the heritage of Tokoname-yaki, blending tradition and craftsmanship in a form that is both functional and beautiful.
